Sheep Casings - Origins

The sheep casings used by Interma originate in the Middle and Central East; with good reason, as those casings are considered as being exceptionally robust when used for filling and therefore they are the variety preferred for use in industrial manufacturing purposes.

The terrain coupled with the often very severe climate has brought forth a particularly robust strain of sheep, i.e. short-tailed and with a sparse fleece. The middle and central eastern countries boast over 26 different races of sheep.

In the wide expanses of countryside it is still even today, in the main nomadic tribes who are responsible for sheep-rearing and breeding.

Especially the higher wage costs in European countries led to the time consuming job of sorting the casings being carried out on location. So, annually many million hanks of sheep casings are processed and prepared for export purposes, mainly for Europe.
